WILDCARD
[shooting off generic starter prompts. but if you wanna plug in something new or different, send me a PM or ask below. do you want to catch vanitas cheating at casino games? do you want to meet him somewhere else around the golden peacock? he's brand new to sex physically, but mentally he knows about it and is anything but a prude, so any of these prompts (or yours) can become nsfw. also, and this is important, vanitas creates and controls monsters called unversed, so he can and will use them to get what he wants. his age is a weird mess in canon due to time shenanigans, but if you still wanna get freaky... monsters. just saying.]

Backtagging – It’s somewhat thread-dependent, but usually I’ll backtag forever.
Threadhopping – Send me a PM first. If everyone involved agrees, jump on in.
Fourthwalling – Only if the thread already permits it; otherwise keep it to ooc notes.
Offensive Subjects – I’m not really bothered by much; just keep it tactful.
Kinks – Kink-list is here. Note: This is my personal k-list; Vanitas’ kinks are interpreted via his character.

ł₵ ₱ɆⱤ₥ł₴₴łØ₦₴
Hugging
You’re more than welcome to try, but Vanitas does not like people getting into his personal space. Especially not for weak, stupid stuff like hugs and embraces. If you happen to be on tolerable/good terms with him and try to hug him, he’ll end up shoving you away in irritated annoyance. At the very best, he’ll tolerate it for a few seconds with a mutter or scowl. Then shove. If you’re on antagonistic/bad terms with him and try to hug him, he’s going to deck you in the face or throw your ass through a window. At the very worst, he’ll assume you’re attacking him and will fight you, with or without his abilities. Now, if he wants to hug you—and we’re talking a one-armed drape thing to be a creep—then he’ll get close on his terms and be fine with it. Though expect a recoil if you point out you either like it or consider it something affectionate from him. On the off chance there’s a committed relationship with him (including assumed CR), then emotional hugging might be cool…

Kissing
Again, you’re welcome to try, but the same as above goes for kissing as well. Though it’s a bit different depending on the “why” behind the kiss. If you’re trying to kiss him out of affection or romance, expect an averted face + head tilt away, a stiff-armed shove, or a punch or kick in the mouth, depending on what kind of terms you’re on with him. Good, neutral, bad, respectively. Don’t do that kind of soft crap to him. Now, if the kiss is for something hot and sexual, so long as he’s receptive to it, kiss away; he’ll enjoy it and return it, probably with interest. Passionate, carnal stuff like that, without those weak feelings, is fine. He can be a very intense kisser and isn’t shy about using his tongue or getting things wet or bringing teeth into it. Once more, on the off chance there’s a committed relationship with him (including assumed CR), then softer kissing might be cool…

Flirting
Go ahead. If you pique his interest, he’s got no problem throwing some sexy words your way. But you better keep his interest because he’s not afraid to shut you down with something nasty or insulting if he loses that intrigue. Flirting can range anywhere from sexual and romantic to crass and dirty; he doesn’t care, so long as it’s entertaining. Unwanted flirting, however, will get a curt rebuff or insult. Pursing the issue with him when he’s not interested usually results in some sarcastic sass designed to hurt—or a painful physical rejection—so push your luck as you want.

Fighting
Bring it on. Vanitas is a vicious, aggressive person who generally hates anyone who comes across him, regardless of what they do. He’s not afraid to pick a fight with someone (or just hurt them) if he’s bored or annoyed. Similarly, he’s quick to anger and take offense at even slight provocation (when he feels like it), and he’ll lash out to prove a point or express his superiority. A very powerful Keyblade wielder who’s done little more than train and fight his entire short life, Vanitas is a living weapon and a dangerous opponent to deal with. Plus, he’s quite pragmatic and treacherous, so don’t expect a fair fight from this guy. Strikes from behind, feigned injury or defeat, surprise attacks, picking off weak fighters, psychological warfare, and bullying torments are things you can count on dealing with when fighting him.

Injuring
Hurt the hell out of him. Vanitas’ entire life is filled with little more than pain and anguish, fueling all that hatred and bitterness inside. He’s used to pain, both self-inflicted and external, and has a very high tolerance for discomfort. Vanitas is a sadomasochist when it comes to fighting; inflicting and receiving pain brings him amusement and getting his ass handed to him just makes him laugh crazily. He’s very hard to put down for good, due to his insane stamina and willingness to make strategic retreats; he’ll get right back up and walk off after a beat down as if it were nothing. Small wounds like cuts, burns, punctures, bruises, and strains won’t to stop him at all. Major wounds like impalements, dismemberments, broken bones, torn muscles, and internal ruptures may slow him down, but won’t end the fight unless his body’s so broken he can’t physically move. Magical wounds can impair him to a greater degree, but since he can use magic himself, it depends who’s better. Speaking of that, Vanitas does have access to Curega, a powerful healing spell that can bring himself back to prime condition. So watch out.

Killing
If the thread calls for it, sure. Vanitas has been "killed" before, though in Kingdom Hearts, "death" is a hard-to-define state for the characters, since it’s metaphorical, metaphysical, transcendent, and other vague words. His demise at Ventus’ hand returned him to Ventus’ heart, but considering he still lives on in said heart—enough to be revived by Xehanort later—it’s arguable if he was all that "dead" in the first place. Many of the characters in the series have "died" and still lived on afterwards in different forms or in other beings, only to be revived or returned to normal later by killing the "form" or "being" they were post-death. Confusing, right? Right. Generally, if Vanitas is killed via some Kingdom Hearts version of killing, it’s possible for him to die and still come back. However, outside of the KH-verse, if say you whack his head off with a bat or blow him up with a bomb, he’ll be dead dead.

Mind Reading
He’s susceptible to mind reading, yes, but trust me, you do not want to do this. It’s dark, scary, angry, and painful in there, not to mention memories are another multi-faceted aspect of Kingdom Hearts. Vanitas’ personal memories are interspersed with Ventus’ due to them sharing a heart, so you’ll end up not only seeing Vanitas’ memories, but also viewing Ventus’ with Vanitas’ very-nasty commentary. If he finds out someone’s reading his mind, Vanitas will attack them without hesitation, since his head and heart aren’t someone’s to view if he has a say in it. Depending on the type of mind reading (emotionally-interactive or only-observing), he can and will assault the invader with his memories. The only safe way to do this is by getting his permission first, and that will take a very good reason.

Warnings
Even in his canon, Vanitas is known as a very disturbed and violent character. His past is filled with abuse, his attitude is cruel and rude, he’s a horrible bully towards other characters, and his sadistic delight in tormenting Ventus and his friends for his own selfish reasons is a trigger for some people. Since Kingdom Hearts is a G-PG-rated video game series, no one uses any foul language (asides from the very rare “damn” slipping through), but had the rating been more adult, most of the fandom agrees that Vanitas would have no problem using curse words and other bad language. So, he does. Understandably, his character is hard to swallow for some people. If you or your character would prefer not to interact with Vanitas due to all the things mentioned above, feel free to decline any tags from him or comment here and I’ll avoid tagging you with him.

"It happened when you and I were split into two. The negativity took shape as these monsters. They are what I feel—a horde of fledgling emotions under my control. I released them in all the worlds I could. The Unversed were the perfect opponents. And better yet, no matter how many times you defeat them, their negativity flows right back into me. You never stood a chance."
―Vanitas, explaining the existence of the Unversed to Ventus

The Unversed (アンヴァース Anvāsu), meaning "those who were not well-versed in their own existences", are monsters that appear as the main enemies of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. They are considered "the opposite of human life" and grow from the negative emotions produced by Vanitas when he was created from Ventus. It is because of this that Vanitas can both create and control them, using them as warriors and servants who obey his every command. By all accounts, the Unversed are extensions of Vanitas himself, living personifications of his emotions and part of his power and influence—effectively making him the first and original Unversed. Because they are a part of Vanitas, the destruction of each Unversed causes Vanitas physical pain, which then becomes the source of more Unversed's existence.

Unversed, like the Heartless and the Nobodies, come in many shapes, sizes, and colors and have a variety of forms that are encountered over the course of their existence, but all are designated with red eyes and the Unversed emblem. As the concept of “emotion” was a key component in their conception and design theme, the Unversed’s red eyes are made to resemble smiling, laughing, raging, and crying "faces" somewhere upon their bodies, such as the Cursed Coach’s eyes making it appear to be crying.

The Unversed emblem is emblazoned at least once on every single Unversed, with the exception of the Flood. The sigil is designed to resemble a heart expressing emotion and thus uses sharp corners, deep curves, and straight edges to form a heart shape in its center. Certain parts of the Unversed symbol's design resemble some Unversed's eyes, however the symbol itself is nearly always black.

The Unversed lack a direct link to the heart, but they instead represent the emotions found in hearts. Unlike Heartless and Nobody bosses, whom are enveloped in light when defeated, the Unversed bosses are consumed in a dark flame when vanquished. Chronologically, the Unversed are either the first or second enemy referenced in the series, as they are the second race to manifest, but the first to attack the Realm of Light.

The Unversed were born soon after Vanitas was created by Xehanort from the extracted darkness in Ventus' heart. The first few came into existence out of mixed feelings of self-hatred Vanitas felt over himself. Disgusted by their appearance and connection to him, Vanitas tried to destroy them, only to discover that he could do nothing but re-absorb them into himself once they were killed. The negativity of the defeated Unversed returned to Vanitas’ mind, worsening his mental state and thus spawning even more Unversed from these negative feelings, trapping Vanitas in a vicious cycle where he was forced to fight more Unversed. Unable to defeat the very monsters that he spawned without more pain and suffering falling upon him, Vanitas finally broke down and decided to aid Xehanort in forging the χ-blade so his pain could finally cease, even if that meant using the Unversed as a means to do so.

After the Mark of Mastery conducted by Eraqus, Vanitas unleashed the Unversed on all the worlds he could in accordance with Master Xehanort's ambitions to get both Terra and Ventus to leave the Land of Departure. Around the same time, as Master Xehanort left the Land of Departure, the existence of the Unversed was brought to the attention of Master Eraqus by the Keyblade master's old friend, Master Yen Sid. Master Eraqus sent Terra and Aqua (two of his three apprentices) on a quest to find Master Xehanort and put an end to the threat to the Princesses of Heart the Unversed pose. However, Eraqus did not plan on his other apprentice, Ventus, going after Terra.

In each of the worlds they plagued, the Unversed appeared before and aided those with negative thoughts and emotions, instinctively attracted towards beings who harbor such intense negativity to feed on that negativity. They served as cannon fodder for Vanitas and Xehanort’s goals, as well as enemies for Terra, Aqua, and Ventus to defeat and grow stronger as they battled over the course of their respective journeys. Vanitas ultimately reveals the Unversed's origins to Ventus right before their final clash: they are his creations, loyal only to him. As he is a being created from the purest and most raw form of darkness, Vanitas manipulated his negative thoughts and emotions and spawned them in physical form as the Unversed. To serve both Master Xehanort's plans to create the χ-blade and his own desire to cause misery for others, Vanitas visited as many worlds as he could and released his minions.

In addition to Master Xehanort's scheme to create the χ-blade, take Terra's body for himself, and start a new Keyblade War, the Unversed’s primary purpose was to ensure that Ventus would grow stronger with every confrontation. Their very cycle of existence also served to increase Vanitas' emotions and powers, as the only “downside” to defeating the Unversed was that any of the negativity released after they're defeated ended up back in Vanitas, who then just respawned them in other worlds. Using several of his extensions to hold his other half in place, Vanitas forcefully fused himself back into Ventus’ body. With Vanitas back in Ventus' body and his eventually defeat, the whole Unversed race fell into extinction upon their progenitor’s death and ceased to be. However, once Vanitas was revived, the Unversed returned, serving as Vanitas’ personal army while he attacked a factory in Monsters, Inc.

While Vanitas doesn’t personally name his attacks, his fighting style does see him using similar patterns between his battles, including favored attacks and trusted combos that have seen him through several fights. He combines superhuman strength, expert Keyblade wielding, potent magic, and powerful control over darkness to overwhelm his opponent. He specializes in close combat fighting and is a difficult and dangerous opponent due to his quick counterattacks if struck multiple times. One of his most common techniques is to switch between defense to offense via teleporting behind opponents at high speeds to launch attacks while leaving after-images of himself to confuse them. Below is a list and description of his named attacks, though he is an extremely flexible fighter and adapts to his battlefield as needed. Don’t expect a fair fight from him either; he’s not afraid at all to strike from behind, launch sneak attacks, and kill someone who’s down if it means winning (or surviving).

Continuous Slash (連続斬り Renzokukiri): Vanitas dashes forwards and then slashes at his opponent with his Keyblade. Whether he connects or not, he can choose to follow the strike with an upward somersault slash that releases a crescent-shaped wave of dark energy. This energy wave homes in on its target and upon contact, slashes them and inflicts a Confuse status on them.
Warp Kirioroshi (ワープ斬り下ろし Wāpu Kirioroshi): Vanitas teleports from his current position, reappears above his opponent, and launches a devastating downward strike. He often combines this technique with magic and darkness to increase the damage or defend himself during the recoil. Swift opponents who are alert enough can sense his appearance above them or notice his shadow on the ground below just before he crashes down.
Shadow Dive (シャドウダイブ Shadou Daibu): Vanitas dives into the ground and burrows through it while homing in on his opponent. Once he’s within range, he bursts from the ground with a powerful upward strike. He often rains down magic with the technique to trap his opponent or defend himself. Opponents can track his position underground by paying attention to the moving pool of darkness he casts on the ground above him just before reappearing.
Spiraling Slash (回転突進斬り Kaiten Tosshin Kiri): Vanitas dives towards his opponent with his Keyblade held overhead while spinning through the air. Upon contact, the drilling action impales his opponent. Depending on his strength and intent, he’ll either leave his opponent skewered on his blade or will magically (or physically) drill clean through their body and emerge from the other side. He can also use this to pass through barriers or obstacles.
X-Discharge (Xディスチャージ X-Disuchāji): Vanitas powers up his Keyblade with darkness and slashes at his opponent. Whether he connects or not, he can choose to follow the strike by releasing an X-shaped wave of dark energy. This energy wave homes in on its target and if it makes contact, either carves a large X-shaped slash in it or tears it apart completely.
Afterimage(残像拳 Zanzōken): Vanitas moves so swiftly, an image of him is left behind to confuse the opponent into attacking the illusion. Vanitas normally uses this technique for escape purposes; if he’s caught in an opponent's combo, he only suffers a few hits before teleporting above or behind his foe to retaliate. Depending on circumstances, Vanitas makes use of his sheer speed to accomplish this or magically teleports away, both leaving his image behind.
Flight (舞空術 Bukūjutsu): Vanitas moves through the air via levitation to slow or stop his descent and flight to glide and fly around the area. Vanitas normally uses flight as a means of transportation to get from one world to the next but will use flight to glide and hover during battle. This gives him the advantage of staying out of his opponent’s range and enabling him to attack them at unrealistic angles, while also providing him unparalleled mobility during his assault to perform techniques that would normally be very impractical or downright impossible without flight.
Dark Spiral (ダークスパイラル Dāku Supairaru): Vanitas wraps himself in dark energy and proceeds to dash through the air at high speeds, attempting to bodily ram his opponent. The aura around him damages the opponent on contact and protects him from magical attack while he’s dashing. The more damage he endures, the more often he’ll make use of this technique.
Dark Splicer (ダークスプライサー Dāku Supuraisā): Vanitas begins to teleport around his opponent repeatedly while slashing at them with his Keyblade. The teleportation prevents attacks from landing on him and due to its sheer speed and random nature, makes it difficult to predict where he’ll appear next. The more damage he takes, the more this attack’s length increases.
Dark Firaga (ダークファイガ Dāku Faiga): A darkness-empowered version of the Firaga spell, the most powerful fire-based magic in Kingdom Hearts. Vanitas launches a large fireball at his opponent. Upon striking, it detonates in a fiery explosion, the size and damage depending on how much magic Vanitas used. He can split the fireball into three smaller fireballs that home in on his opponent to create disadvantageous situations.
Dark Thundaga (ダークサンダガ Dāku Sandaga): A darkness-empowered version of the Thundaga spell, the most powerful lightning-based magic in Kingdom Hearts. Vanitas summons lightning from the sky directly overhead his opponent’s position. He can summon a single bolt or cast multiple bolts in a rain of electricity to limit his opponent’s movements. If struck, the opponent can suffer anything from paralysis to full electrocution.
Dark Blizzaga (ダークブリザガ Dāku Burizaga): A darkness-empowered version of the Blizzaga spell, the most powerful ice-based magic in Kingdom Hearts. Vanitas sends ice in different forms towards his opponent. Forms range from large chunks of ice blasted at the opponent, a wave of freezing temperatures blown around him in close range, and large glaciers erupting from the ground beneath his position or his opponent’s.
Curaga (ケアルガ Kearuga): The most powerful healing magic in Kingdom Hearts. Vanitas raises his Keyblade and a green field surrounds him before he magically heals himself. This spell repairs his physical body from damage, cures him from inflicted illnesses, and expels foreign substances like toxins and objects from his body. Like other Keyblade wielders, he can cast this spell on others to heal them, but due to his being a massive jerk, don’t count on it. His arrogance usually means he’ll only resort to casting this spell if his opponent utilizes some sort of healing ability or item of their own. Usually…
Dark Cannon (ダークキャノン Dāku Kyanon): Vanitas generates a large ball of dark blue energy from the tip of his Keyblade and then fires it at his opponent either in ball form or as a large beam. This is Vanitas’ personal Shotlock, a combat system found in Birth by Sleep.
Dark Fang (ダークファング Dāku Fangu): Vanitas wraps the entire battlefield in darkness before dashing around the area at intense speeds. While moving, he leaves behind a row of dark crystal spikes on either side of his opponent. These crystals then rush at the opponent and inflict a Blind status on them upon contact. Vanitas can use these crystals in tandem with any of his other attacks, leading to deadly cross-ups.
Clone Burst (クローンバースト Kurōn Bāsuto): Vanitas encases himself in a sphere of impenetrable darkness and launches several dark clones of himself at the opponent, before charging straight through the barrier and attacking on his own. These clones are solid darkness that can damage his opponent via blunt trauma and lacerate or impale with Keyblade strikes. The entire sphere can either be crashed into his adversary or broken apart to release Vanitas’ personal strike against his distracted opponent. Any part of this rush that makes bodily contact inflicts a Blind status on the opponent.

Keyblade Ride (キーブレードーライド Kīburēdo Raidu)
Ultimate Charge (アルティメットチャージ Arutimetto Chāji)
Grand Cross (グランドクロス Gurando Kurosu?)

D-Link Skills
Dark Spiral (ダークスパイラル Dāku Supairaru) is a technique that allows the user to generate a corona of light around them by spinning their Keyblade and then bodily drill into their target shrouded by the corona. If an enemy is hit with the technique, up to two more drilling charges can be added to the attack. If Vanitas uses Dark Spiral at the same time as this command is used, a clash will initiate between Vanitas and the user, which is won by quickly pouring more energy into the attack. Regardless of whether the attack connects or not, it has a reload time of 5 seconds during which it cannot be used.

Dark Splicer (ダークスプライサー Dāku Supuraisā) is a technique that allows the user to teleport around the enemy multiple times while leaving behind confusing afterimages and slashing at them with their Keyblade. If an enemy is hit with the technique, additional slashes can be added at the end of the attack. If a "bullet time" effect occurs, indicating that Vanitas used Dark Splicer at the same time, the player can input the indicated prompts to evade Vanitas's attack and slash him away. Regardless of whether the attack connects or not, it has a reload time of 5 seconds during which it cannot be used.

Dark Link (ダークオブリンク Dāku obu Rinku, lit. "Dark of Link") is a technique that allows the user to generate three crystals in a trigram formation, project rays that fuse to become a giant beam of dark energy, and finally shoot the massive beam of radiant energy at the target. Dark Link is a Class A Shotlock that deals dark damage and can lock onto up to 20 enemies before firing. If Vanitas uses Dark Cannon or Dark Spiral at the same time as this Shotlock is used, a clash will initiate between Vanitas and the user, which can be won by rapidly pouring more energy into the attack.

Last Word (ラストチャージ Rasuto Chāji, lit. "Last Charge") is a technique that allows the user to charge into an enemy and then generate five intersecting columns of crystallized beams of light. These columns then compress into a single sphere of light that locks the opponent into place before the user performs by a powerful, finishing slash to end the battle. Since the user charges in the direction they are facing, they may miss the attack if they are not facing or locked on to an enemy. Also, if the user is too close, it is possible to push an enemy out of the way with the light columns at the start of the attack.
vaincreux: (Default)
In the Kingdom Hearts universe, Darkness is a force parallel to Light, and is considered a metaphysical concept as well as an “element” that can be used in the form of energy and attacks. “Darkness” in and of itself, is never definitively identified in the series, but seems to have roots in both the literal lack of light and “dark” concepts such as emotions (rage, selfishness, cruelty, arrogance, etc.), goals (conquest, power, manipulation, etc.), and ideas (nihilism, disregard, and ironically, balance). It creates and feeds off primal emotions such as jealousy, revenge, hatred, greed, and fear. In the process, it makes those it affects experience and exhibit these feelings while constantly making those feelings stronger, eventually leading to the affected succumbing to the darkness and losing their hearts to the darkness entirely.

Though darkness is mostly used by the series' villains and is believed to be pure evil, it is not entirely malevolent; friendly characters are able to use the powers of darkness to some effect, ranging from traversing worlds via opening the Corridors of Darkness to using dark energy to fight for the sake of others. Nonetheless, different characters have different views on Darkness, with some viewing it as nothing but "hate and rage," others viewing it as “a beginning … not an end” and the true nature of everything that exists, while others insists that light and darkness are interdependent and cannot exist without one another.

Nearly all beings have darkness in their hearts, but the levels of darkness and light vary from person to person. Darkness can to cause the loss of people's hearts if they delve too deep into it. Slowly suppressed and conquered by darkness' influence, these unfortunate souls become Heartless and—if their Heart is strong enough—leave behind a body that becomes a Nobody. Darkness can also change the physical appearance of those it affects depending on how much of it has saturated the user. Changes are usually indicated by the skin becoming darker (in this case, tan to brown to black), the ears becoming pointier (sharper at the tips, akin to elves), the eyes becoming a golden yellow hue, and some hold that people who utilize the darkness in their hearts will have a stench: the scent of darkness itself. Those who follow the path of Darkness will usually gain untold power to accomplish their goals, but always at the expense of something of their former selves.

While darkness is often associated with evil, it can be used for the force of good. If one can accept darkness into themselves without allowing the darkness to consume them, they may wield its powers without succumbing to its influences. Darkness is also seen being manipulated into attacks by many characters, both “good” and “bad,” and thus used for both noble and nefarious purposes. Darkness can be used to destroy and can also be used to revive, though the latter seems to only be effective on characters heavily affiliated with darkness.

Darkness can also be used for transportation via the Corridors of Darkness (闇の回廊 Yami no Kairō). These corridors are unpredictable pathways that interlink the various worlds of the Kingdom Hearts universe, as well as connecting the Realm of Darkness and Realm Between to the Realm of Light. Thus, they allow their users to travel between locations with a great degree of speed. Normally, they can only be opened by those who have given themselves over to darkness. However, experienced users of Darkness can open them even if they haven’t succumbed to the Darkness completely, and occasionally, those with particularly strong feelings or hatred can successfully force open and use the Corridors of Darkness. Additionally, an opened corridor can be used by almost anyone once opened. However, as these pathways are physical corridors formed out of Darkness, it is unsafe for a normal person to travel them

Prolonged or repetitive use of this means of travel will erode one's body and allow Darkness to manifest deeper within a traversing being and their heart, leaving them more vulnerable to its negative effects in the long run and possibly corrupting one’s heart. Infrequent usage of this travel won’t allow the Darkness enough time to stain the traveler’s heart, as the influential power of Darkness depends on the strength of a person's heart. However, the Heartless and the Nobodies have no worry of being affected by this, since the Heartless already have corrupted hearts, and the Nobodies do not have hearts to corrupt.

To protect themselves from the corrupting influence of Darkness once inside, many travelers in the corridors wear special black coats to shield against it. The black coat (黒いコート Kuroi kōto), also called a "cloak", is an oft-used article of clothing imbued with magic that protects the wearer's heart from corruption when traveling through the darkness between worlds. Its abilities allow the wearer to use the corridors of darkness to quickly traverse the realms without being affected by the corrupting atmosphere. When denizens of light or weak-hearted people need to utilize the corridors of darkness, they also don the black coat. Those without the coats can survive occasional exposure to the Corridors' darkness if their hearts are strong enough, while beings with hearts of pure light can survive the trip with only occasional discomfort.

The coat has other magical properties beyond its darkness-shielding powers. It adjusts to the size and shape of the wearer, such as covering Micky Mouse’s distinctive ears and even resizing when the wearer transforms into another being that is physically different to their previous form. Additionally, the coat materializes the distinctive black gloves, pants, and boots on the wearer’s lower half when donned, magically concealing any clothing originally worn by the wearer. When the wearer discards the coat, the gloves, pants, and boots also vanish, replaced as the wearer’s personal outfits reappear on their person. Drawing the hood shut to a certain level will generate a veil of darkness inside, obscuring the face of the wearer completely unless willingly loosened or subject to direct light inside the hood.

While the coat is extremely durable, it has been depicted in some cases as being capable of sustaining damage and can be mended like any ordinary article of clothing. Damage to the coat can nullify the darkness-shielding abilities of the garment, requiring a user to have the coat mended before using the corridors of darkness. It was said that Nobodies who wear the cloak have their eyes and noses rendered useless, depriving them of sight and scent while wearing it. From a real-world perspective, the black coat was originally used to conceal the faces of characters who had not been designed yet, but in game, it has become heavily associated with mystery, disguise, threat, and suspicious aid. One never knows who might be lurking beneath the coat’s shadowed blackness.

A related method of transportation lies in the Ocean Between. This realm, also known as the "ocean of stars/interspace" (星の大海 Hoshi no Taikai) and "sea between worlds/Other Sky" (異空の海 Ikū no Umi, lit. "Sea of Other Skies"), is a vast space between the worlds. It is threaded by the Gummi Routes and Lanes Between, which serve as paths between worlds for those with the knowledge to use them. The Lanes Between (異空の回廊 Ikū no Kairō, lit. "Corridors of the Skies") are a series of "roads" between the worlds that were unlocked earlier and are useful paths to navigate the worlds. To enter the Lanes, the Keyblade wielder raises his or her Keyblade to the sky, and creates a portal leading into the Lanes, appearing somewhat like the Dark Corridors. Upon opening the way, they usually call their "Keyblade Glider" and use it to enter. The Lanes resemble the Corridors of Darkness, but with a color scheme closely resembling the Aurora Borealis. The presence of Darkness and Emptiness is very strong within them, forcing travelers to wear Keyblade Armor as a safety precaution.

Travel between the worlds is normally impossible since the worlds are all protected by dimensional barriers that prevent outsiders from entering for the most part. However, these barriers can be broken, resulting in a meteor shower in that world. So long as the dimensional barriers have been shattered, travel between the worlds can be accomplished by use of a Gummi Ship (a magical ship of special technology) and by using a Keyblade Glider (a magical, personalized vehicle created by a Keyblade wielder’s Keyblade itself).
vaincreux: (Default)
Vanitas, being a Keyblade wielder, has a high mastery of magic at his disposal, which he often combines with his physical Keyblade attacks. In Kingdom Hearts, magic plays a major role in story, world, and combat. The Keyblade itself possesses and channels very powerful magic and metaphysical abilities, granting its wielders access to their own magic so that may or may not be dependent on whether the weapon is currently with them. Other characters in the series can use magic even without a Keyblade, though this comes from their own sources, such as natural talents or magical items. Most Keyblade wielders use similar magic but apply it via wide and personalized fields of usage. Many of Vanitas’ magical abilities revolve around elemental manipulation, transportation via teleportation and portals, and levitation.

Vanitas specializes in three forms of elemental magic: fire, lighting, and ice. These are the Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard spells and their upgrades, which he uses in conjunction with his close-range Keyblade combat and evasive maneuvers.

Fire magic is useful for burning things, injuring opponents with burn wounds, and setting other items on fire to provide light and warmth. Vanitas’ long-range fire magic revolves around shooting a single, large fireball at his opponent and then separating the same fireball into three smaller, homing fireballs. His close-range fire magic revolves around bombarding his opponents with fireballs from the air right before he emerges from the ground for an ascending strike.

Lightning magic is useful for shocking things, damaging enemies with paralysis, and powering technological machines and magical conduits. Vanitas’ lightning-based magic revolves around striking his opponent with lightning bolts from far away after leaping or while floating in the air. He can call a single bolt for a pinpoint strike or can call a rain of bolts to cover a wide area with multi-branching strikes but doesn’t use this element for close-range combat.

Ice magic is useful for freezing things, immobilizing adversaries with frostbite, and solidifying liquids to provide solid-albeit-slippery paths and cooling. Vanitas’s long-range ice magic revolves around shooting boulders of ice at his opponent with very strong homing capabilities. His close-range ice magic revolves around erupting large pillars of ice from the ground under his opponents as he appears in the air above them and drops on their heads for a descending strike.

Vanitas does have access to wind-based magic, but this is primarily a side effect of his ability to levitate and fly. While he hasn’t utilized wind-base spells like his fellow Keyblade wielders, he has greater flight abilities. In that Vanitas can not only glide around an area, but he can also levitate to slow or stop his fall and can ascend into true flight when surrounding himself with dark energy. Interestingly, though he typically uses the Corridors of Darkness to travel, Vanitas is freely capable of surviving in and navigating the Lanes Between unaided by surrounding himself in an aura of dark energy. As he can traverse both the Lanes Between and Corridors of Darkness without the use of a Keyblade Glider or protection from Keyblade Armor or a black coat, it’s likely that his invulnerability to the corroding influence of darkness is due to him being a creature born of pure darkness; there is nothing left inside him to corrupt.

His infamous defense is composed of evasive magic rather than physical blocking or countering. Vanitas can magically teleport above opponents at high speeds to launch attacks while leaving afterimages of himself to confuse and distract his adversaries. He can also sink into a pool of darkness below him and then burrow his way through the ground to travel to his opponent’s location. Both evasive techniques can be used multiple times in a row to bring him back to close range and protect him from damage while traveling. Depending on where he reappears, Vanitas can attack from above, behind, or below while his opponent is otherwise occupied. The speed at which he can perform these spells means he only ever takes a few hits in a combo before escaping and retaliating.

Vanitas has some degree of telekinetic-like magic, as he summoned a wave-like vortex of flying Keyblades when fighting Terra, Aqua, and Ventus. Since the grounds of the Keyblade Graveyard are littered with abandoned Keyblades, it’s arguable if he can use this magic to pull any sort of matter into this wave-like attack. Either way, he controls the cloud like a wave or tendril, bending it and shaping it to maneuver around the battlefield. If Vanitas wants, he’ll jump onto the storm and ride it around like a surfer, firing magic attacks from his Keyblade or occasionally throwing some of the wave at his opponent. Though he can dismiss the storm at will, he’s more apt to “end” the magic by dismounting the cloud and ramming the entire mass onto his opponent like a tidal wave or rainstorm. Vanitas can be knocked off his vortex with well-timed far-ranged attacks, however it doesn’t guarantee the magic’s immediate end.

While his elemental magic is powerful, Vanitas specializes in using darkness and dark energy. His nature as a being of darkness gives him complete control over the element, which not only allows him to use dark magic, but also infuse the Void Gear with darkness and surround himself in darkness, strengthening his attack power. After charging his weapon, Vanitas can envelope it and himself in a damaging aura of darkness. He utilizes several energy-based attacks in this state, unleashing dark energy shockwaves and firing homing dark blasts. He’ll lunge at his opponent and slam the ground with his now-massive weapon to create an X-shaped shockwave. Or he’ll either swipe a blue crescent-shaped wave of energy or shoot an X-shaped blast of energy, both of which home in on his opponent. His magic is also enhanced with this darkness, allowing him to create gusts of wind strong enough to send his enemies flying with a single swing of his hand.

Vanitas has two special techniques he activates in this dark-energy-enhanced state. The Dark Splicer sees him slashing his opponent multiple times while teleporting around them to attack from all sides in a blinding array of cuts. The Dark Spiral sees him charging at his opponent with a vicious stab multiple times while cloaked in dark energy and teleporting to a new angle at the end of each rush. Vanitas can also fire dark energy blasts from his Keyblade, energize the Keyblade with darkness, and has his own personal Shotlock called "Dark Cannon", wherein he creates three large blue crystals which focus together and fire a large blue beam of dark energy, further augmented by the rotating triangle of crystals. He can also use a variation of his Shotlock, called "Last Word", to surround his opponent with three beams of crystallized darkness, then shatters the group with one fatal slash of his Keyblade.

In Kingdom Hearts, the main and most powerful weapon is a magical, key-shaped blade known as a Keyblade. Those who fight with them are called Keyblade Wielders. Each wielder possesses his or her own personal Keyblade they can summon and dismiss at will. Vanitas is a Keyblade wielder and wields his personal Keyblade, a red and black cog-themed blade known as the Void Gear, which has been with him since his birth. Vanitas had the ability to wield a Keyblade of his own because he is a being created from the extracted darkness of fellow Keyblade wielder Ventus’ heart. He summons and dismisses his Keyblade to and from his hand in a flash of light and purple flame.

The Keyblade has many powers and abilities inherent to it but is primarily used as a sword. As a swordsman, Vanitas is a powerful close-range fighter, utilizing a vicious and arrogant battle style revolving around fast, strong attacks and evasive counterattacks. His normal assault incorporates swipes, stabs, and bludgeons, ranging anywhere from swift multiple-hit combos to devastating downward strikes, many of which he employs after teleporting behind or above his opponent. He has no problem coming at someone via head-on charges or drilling lunges, but often prefers to attack at different angles, such as charging his enemy from the side and even burrowing underground to remerge with a vicious upward slash.

By energizing his Keyblade with darkness, Vanitas can increase his attack strength and protect his body with an aura of darkness. When attacking, he hardly ever keeps still, incorporating dashes, slides, improbable acrobatic flips, and unnatural confusing twists to prevent his opponent from ever having a good chance to strike back. However, due to his resilience and sadomasochistic side, if an opponent proves too evasive or gets through his defenses, Vanitas will take a few hits just to give himself opportunity to counterattack at the best opportunity. Similarly, if his continued attacks from different angles prove to be easy to counter by a skilled opponent, he’ll resort to attempting to overpower them with sheer strength and either disarm them or break their weapon.

Near the end of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, when he fuses with Ventus, Vanitas gains the ability to wield the most powerful Keyblade of all, the χ-blade. This weapon multiplies his initial strength and attack range a great deal. Vanitas shows great skill in wielding both the incomplete and complete/finalized versions of the χ-blade, able to perform strong combos and powerful desperation moves. With the χ-blade, Vanitas becomes even more formidable, being able to skillfully use the legendary blade to perform powerful moves including energy-based slashes and ground-cleaving strikes, incorporating his teleportation to unleash swift attacks from all sides, and bombarding his opponent with several rapid jabs while cloaked by darkness.

Vanitas's battle stance bears a notable resemblance to Riku's and Master Xehanort’s. He stands with his sword arm raised over his head, held out away from his shoulder, and pulled slightly back. This points Keyblade out in front of him at a downward angle, somewhat level with his eyes with his blade’s teeth angled inward. Vanitas holds his free arm in front of him at chest level, hand held straight as if he’s ready to catch something. He keeps his legs spread in a braced position that’s more horizontal than vertical, as if he’s prepared to block and brace rather than move and dodge. With his guard arm’s posture being a mixture of guarded readiness and cocky provocation and his blade arm’s suggestion of aggressive threat, Vanitas’ battle stance echoes his personal mannerisms: vicious and arrogant contempt.

The Void Gear (ヴォイドギア Voido Gia) is the default form of Vanitas' personal Keyblade. Its color scheme is mostly various shades of black, grey, and red, with a gear-shaped hilt and tip, and blue eyes in the center of the guard and near the top of the blade. It is a powerful Keyblade fueled by Vanitas’ dark feelings, making it much less willing to leave openings for a counterattack. The Void Gear has impressive stats: +8 in Strength and +4 in Magic, Long Length, a 50% Critical Rate, and a x1.5 Damage output when landing critical hits. Also known as Vanitas's Keyblade (ヴァニタスのキーブレード Vanitasu no Kīburēdo), it can serve as a Keychain for Terra, Ventus, and Aqua, transforming their Keyblades into a copy of the Void Gear and boasting the following description: "A Keyblade with long reach that provides an outstanding boost in Strength and deals higher damage when you land a critical hit."

The Void Gear's teeth and head are black with a red outline and possesses a round, cog-like shape. The guard has the same coloration and cog-like shape as the teeth, forming a semicircle around its red handle. The shaft is predominantly colored in shades of grey and sports a copper-colored gear in the center, with two intersecting, black chains wrapped around it. Two more chains are wrapped around the base of the shaft in a similar fashion. In a rare departure from most Keyblades, its gear-like teeth appear to alternate between blunt like a normal cogwheel and sharp like a circular saw. It also has two blue, reptilian Gazing Eyes: one located in the head of the blade and one embedded in the hilt.

The Gazing Eye (見つめる目 Mitsumeru Me) is a blue eye with a cat's eye iris and belongs to the Master of Masters. He placed it within his Keyblade, which was then passed down from apprentice to apprentice in order to have the Eye observe its surroundings throughout the eons and pass those observances back to the Master in his own era. While the true Eye itself isn’t present on Vanitas’ Void Gear, an identical symbol appears on his Keyblade, replicating the original’s purpose and power and thus having Vanitas serve as an unwitting informant to the Master of Masters. Its Keychain is comprised of three small, copper gears and ends in a charm resembling two halves of a gear arranged in an S-shape. This charm is Vanitas’ personal crest, serving as his symbol in the series, such as appearing on the portal that initiates the battle with the Vanitas Remnant.

The Void Gear's name references the gears and cogs that make up its design, as well as Vanitas's own name, which means "emptiness" in Latin. Fittingly, the weapon's German name is "Clavis Vanitatum" which means "key of vanities" in Latin. In the French version, it is called "Clavis Vacuum", which means "Key of Void" literally. Other interpretations to his Keyblade’s name are more cruelly-symbolic of Vanitas’ creation and purpose. "Void" suggests his darkness and emptiness, as darkness is often considered nothing but space without light and Vanitas himself is devoid of light and positiveness. "Gear" suggests his purpose as Master Xehanort sees him: one of the many manipulated cogs in the massive interworking of his plans, forever turning as the other machinations move him, and whose purpose is only to help something larger move forward. Together, it points to Vanitas being nothing more than an "empty tool" for his Master and may be one of the many negative ways he refuses to admit he sees himself as on the inside.

Keyblades (キーブレード Kīburēdo) are mysterious weapons that are prominently featured in the Kingdom Hearts universe. Wielded by the main character and several other major characters, these weapons play an important role in the battle between Darkness and Light. The origins of the Keyblades is, thus far, unclear. Each game references the special qualities of the wielders and some give vague explanations of the Keyblades' power, but none have shown where the Keyblades originated, how they are created, or what their original purpose might have been. One legend mentioned in Kingdom Hearts states that the Keyblade master saved the world, while another said he wrought chaos and destruction upon it. While these legends may appear to contradict themselves, it can be assumed that the Keyblade master chooses how to use the Keyblade, whether for good or evil. The Keyblade and its abilities are known throughout the worlds as a unique and powerful weapon. Some fear the blade’s appearance would send the world into chaos, while are well area of the Keyblade giving the ability for the one who wields it to travel around the worlds.

As the name implies, Keyblades are used in the same way as swords when wielded in combat, with the specific style varying with the wielder. Despite many Keyblades' apparent frailty or lack of a cutting edge, they still make extremely efficient combat weapons and are able to serve as both excellent blunt weapons and supernaturally precise cutting tools. Keyblades come in many different sizes and styles, though most Keyblade wielders are also able to charge energy into their blades and extend their Keyblade's length with Light or Darkness for strong or ultimate attacks. They are particularly effective weapons against creatures of darkness or those connected to hearts, including the Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed, and Dream Eaters. However, as a downside to this, the Heartless use the Keyblade as a homing beacon, attracted to their brilliance, and thus Keyblade wielders are at constant risk of Heartless attacks at any time.

Keyblades are natural conduits for casting magic and commanding magical attacks; even Keyblade wielders without formal training can perform magic with power rivaling that of expert mages upon acquiring one. This is not to say, however, that magic cannot be performed by a Keyblade wielder when they are unable to summon their weapon; Sora was able to use magic despite having his Keyblade stolen and Xion was able to use an array of spells before obtaining her Keyblade. However, this may be person-related, as Data-Sora was prevented from using magic when his Keyblade is destroyed by Maleficent. Keyblades may be used to channel the powers of light or darkness and can be imbued with magic for a variety of effects, including allowing the wielder to inflict greater damage or deal elemental damage to enemies. Some Keyblades have the innate ability to enhance specific kinds of magic, and many also augment the user's magical abilities on a more general level. Keyblades can also augment the holder with other powers and abilities that they would not normally be able to use, such as enhanced senses and superhuman physical abilities.

The main power of the Keyblade, however, is its signature ability to seal or open the barriers and gates or pathways between worlds, as well as to "lock" a world's Keyhole, preventing the Heartless from attacking that world's heart. As an offset of this ability, the Keyblade can also be used to lock or unlock (close or open) any lock, allowing the user to access any sealed interior of a physical object, whether it be a locked room, gate, or treasure chest. This power also extends to the metaphysical realm, as the Keyblade has been shown locking and unlocking the hearts of both people and worlds to release or seal darkness (and thus power or abilities), as well as locking and unlocking memories and dreams to facilitate research and exploration. Keyblade wielders can usually just simply tap the surface of a treasure chest or door and that will be enough to open it. For more magical or metaphysical locks, Keyblade opens and shuts locks by emitting a bright, thin beam of light from its tip; this can also be used as an attack against certain enemies, although it is not featured in general game-play. Some wielders prefer a more dramatic approach by shooting the previously-mentioned beam of light into the lock or physically thrusting the Keyblade into the keyhole (including a person’s chest). Additionally, it is implied Keyblades automatically "lock" language barriers, granting their wielders the ability to understand and speak in different languages without effort. This is seen through many wielders regularly conversing with individuals of different worlds, nationalities, and even species and races with no language issues (though there are exceptions).

There are instances of the Keyblade changing form, such as when a default or intermediary Keyblade evolves into its true state or when one Keyblade becomes two pre-existing Keyblades closely connected to the wielder, but the mechanism behind these transformations is uncertain. A trained Keyblade wielder can transform their Keyblade, changing its size and shape into other objects. This skill can be used offensively to augment its use as a weapon, transforming into armaments such as shields for defense, dual guns that fire magical blasts, and a huge bazooka-like construct. It can also be used as a means of transportation by transforming the Keyblade into a vehicle form known as a "Keyblade Glider". Known Keyblade Glider forms include cycles, hoverboards, platforms, gliders, and chariots. While Keblade Gliders do have some offensive capabilities, their use is normally limited to traveling to, from, and within other worlds.

They Keyblade, while not technically sentient, possesses a special power that only lets a chosen wielder hold it. If another person tries to handle a wielder’s Keyblade, the weapon will instantly return to the hand of its true wielder in a flash. Terra, one of the series’ protagonists noted, "You'll find they're picky about their owners," when an opponent attempted to steal his Keyblade. There is some leeway to this finicky nature. If a wielder voluntarily offers his or her blade to another person to let them hold it, the Keyblade may permit this, but the event is usually only successful between trusted companions who are also fellow Keyblade wielders. Keyblades also seem to be a manifestation of their wielder's hearts and desires and can act upon these desires even when the user is incapacitated. When Aqua gave up hope and allowed herself to be destroyed in the Realm of Darkness, Terra's Earthshaker and Ventus's Wayward Wind came and protected her, despite Terra being possessed, Ventus being comatose, and both in separate realms from their friend.

While there are many qualities a Keyblade wielder must have in order to harness the Keyblade's power, the main requirement is for one to have an exceptionally strong heart, as a Keyblade will refuse to be wielded by anyone without a strong enough heart. Those with the strength of heart to wield a Keyblade are able to give or take them from others or take control of them if they have been abandoned. Those incapable of wielding a Keyblade cannot keep it, even if a wielder hands it to them. Successfully wielding a Keyblade does not extend to those who have simply held one.

A wielder can summon or dispel their Keyblades at will. When wielders summon their Keyblades, they are accompanied by visual effects specific to the user. Where the weapon is kept outside of use is unknow, but it’s suggested the Keyblade sleeps within its wielders heart, since Keyblades are often created from their wielder’s hearts. In battle, some wielders choose to keep their Keyblades dispelled until they start attacking or are attacked, while others prefer to summon their Keyblades as soon as they approach an enemy. It’s entirely possible for a wielder to carry his or her Keyblade around on their person, should they wish, but generally this is impractical due to the size and shape of many Keyblades.

Keyblades are usually handed down from a wielder at the level of a Master to a successor, though rather than passing the actual Keyblade on, the succession grants the successor the ability to summon and wield their own Keyblade. (Sometimes, however, the physical Keyblade is also passed down from Master to successor.) Normally, a Keyblade Master to chooses a person as their successor if they have a strong enough heart and possess the main qualities that allow them to hold a Keyblade. This is accomplished through a brief, but formal ritual, called the Bequeathing, with the Master reciting and the successor touching the offered Keyblade. However, outside of choosing a successor, this Keyblade Bequeathing can happen informally and indirectly through other means. The two shown were when another person accidentally touched a Master’s Keyblade and was deemed qualified, and when a Master’s heart resided inside another’s heart and thus granted the housing heart the ability to wield their own Keyblade due to their hearts linking together.

Normally a Keyblade wielder can only wield a single Keyblade at a time, even if they have possession of more than one. However, some exceptional Keyblade wielders are also able to wield two Keyblades at once and channel both their abilities using the Synch Blade ability. So far though, the only instances of dual-wielding Keyblades like this occurred under a special circumstance: when one Keyblade wielder harbored another Keyblade wielder’s heart inside him alongside his own. Temporary situations can momentarily replicate the Synch Blade ability, such as when one Keyblade wielder allows another wielder to use his or her Keyblade as this second, or when one Keyblade wielder forcefully takes another wielder’s Keyblade. These two instances, however, are only temporary and the Keyblade will soon return to its original wielder. Ultimately, the mechanism and limitations behind dual-wielding transformations is uncertain.

All Keyblades shown are modeled after a key and thus have the same fundamental and distinguishing features: a guard with a handle, a hilt, a shaft, and a head at the end of the shaft that resembles the teeth of a skeleton key (with the exception of one, which is instead modeled after a pin tumbler lock key instead). Most Keyblades also have some theme, usually a world or a person associated with that world, that will reflect in its appearance. Each Keychain has a unique animation for when the Keyblade is summoned, usually symbolizing a specific aspect of its respective Keyblade. Examples include a dark aura and violet sparks, red flame and bright light, shiny bubbles and splashes of water, flower petals and wind, and lightning bolts and clouds, all of which form around the wielder’s hands before the Keyblade actually appears. The particle effects that appear when the Keyblade is used to hit something also change with each Keychain. Examples include conjuring black and white checkered crowns, red and orange flames, grass and flower petals, bubbles and water splashes, flecks of darkness, and sparks of lightning, all of which appear and scatter around the impact area when a solid object is hit.

It's possible to modify a Keyblade's appearance and powers by attaching various Keychains in the wielder's inventory. A Keychain (キーホルダー Kīhorudā?, lit. "Key Holder") is a magical piece of equipment that transforms the Keyblade into a particular form, affecting both its design and abilities, by accessing the power of worlds and individuals. While most Keyblades have a basic form, a Keyblade wielder can upgrade and change the form of the Keyblade with a Keychain. In other words, when a wielder is equipping a "new" Keyblade, he or she is equipping a different Keychain to the Keyblade and thus changing its form. Keychains can change a Keyblade's stats, grant it special abilities, give it a new appearance, and change the effect generated when the Keyblade is summoned and used; this effect is generally based on the Keychain's symbolism. It has not yet been explained exactly what a Keychain is and why it has the power to transform the Keyblade. A wielder usually receives a Keychain after "completing" the events that transpire within a world. Nearly all Keychain tokens are modeled after elements of the world from which they are received in some way, such as representing an important item from the world or being symbolic of a person emotionally connected to the wielder. Since a wielder has not actually been shown receiving the Keychain from someone, it is possible that after saving a world, or completing a major step in that direction, the world itself rewards a wielder with the ability to access its power in the form of a unique Keychain. When equipped with a Keychain, the default Keyblade changes into a themed form that specifically embodies the wielder’s memories of the world or individual the Keychain is associated with. Thus, it is extremely likely that for Keyblades that embody memories of individuals rather than worlds ("people-Keyblades"), the Keychains act as a physical embodiment of the memories the wielders have of those that are important to them. Some Keyblades lack a Keychain; all the broken Keyblades from the Keyblade Graveyard do not possess Keychains. The actual reason for the lack of a Keychain, and the resulting effect on the Keyblade, if any, is unknown.

χ-blade
""χ"... A most ancient letter. Some say "kye," but the meaning is the same. Death... A letter that spells endings."
—Master Xehanort
The χ-blade (χブレード Kīburēdo) is a legendary weapon in the Kingdom Hearts universe and is believed to be more powerful than any Keyblade. While its origins are a mystery, its existence is tied to Kingdom Hearts. Originally, the χ-blade was the counterpart of Kingdom Hearts, serving as both its protector and equal. According to legend, the Keyblade War occurred because of the many souls who lusted after light and power. They desired to take the χ-blade and Kingdom Hearts for themselves and created Keyblades in the image of the χ-blade to find and obtain weapon, ready to battle anyone who got in their way, including each other. In the resulting Keyblade War that took many lives and destroyed the known world in the process, the χ-blade splintered into twenty pieces: seven fragments of pure light and thirteen shards of darkness. The χ-blade and the Keyblade War itself passed into legend in the generations after, with the cause of the war itself being distorted by the legends. It is the original blade after which all Keyblades are imperfectly modeled. The Master of Masters studied the χ-blade and, using the χ-blade as a model, learned to create his own Keyblades. This "creation" isn’t meant in the physical sense, such as forging and tempering a blade, but rather along the lines of pulling one out from the depths of a heart. In other words, Keyblades are extracted from people’s hearts. However, the χ-blade—rather than being a manmade key to an artificial Kingdom Hearts (for example, the Keyblade of Heart)—coexists with the true Kingdom Hearts itself, a perfect union of all hearts and worlds, and is the only thing that can summon its door. Because of its legendary power and transcendent properties, the weapon can manifest itself both physically and mentally to be wielded simultaneously in both planes of existence.

Design
The χ-blade appears to be made up of two crossing Kingdom Keys, with the teeth facing outward. It has a filigree that slightly resembles one on the Ultima Weapon, and the blade slightly resembles the Dream Sword. The incomplete χ-blade's coloring is more red-orange than bluish-yellow, and the blade is slightly covered with an aura of darkness. It also has chips in the side of the blade, lacks a part of the filigree on one side, and part of the Kingdom Key's hilt is missing, making it look somehow broken or shattered. The Keychain is a black and red heart that is similar to the Heartless symbol, only without the fleur-de-lis bottom and jagged cross, with two Kingdom Keys crossed over it. The chain starts out as two separate chains that form into one. The Keychain's two crossed Kingdom Keys is reminiscent of the "Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven" symbol. When the χ-blade hits a target, it releases symbols of gold and dark blue stars, symbolic of light and darkness. Although "χ-blade" is pronounced "Keyblade", the letter "χ" is the letter "chi" from the Greek alphabet. Therefore, the name of the weapon is spelled "χ-blade” but can be pronounced "Kye/Chi-blade" if desired; in both Japanese and English, it is pronounced similarly to "Keyblade". The ancient letter "χ" that is the basis for the weapon’s name and design carries the meaning of "death" and is the letter that "spells endings".

Keyblade wielders display several superhuman physical abilities. In that their level of strength, speed, and stamina significantly exceed what is theoretically feasible for a regular person. While most of the main warrior characters are born with good physical skills, they often increase their prowess by natural or intense training, though others are granted this increase with the Keyblade’s magic. Vanitas was not only granted his impressive physical abilities due to his unnatural birth, but became a powerful Keyblade wielder himself, and was personally trained by Master Xehanort for four years, resulting in his physical prowess being among the top levels in his series.

Vanitas can move at speeds faster than normal eyes can see without any expense to himself and without any gimmicks, even faking out his fellow Keyblade wielders (with his top speeds being within the boundaries of supersonic and lightspeed for short bursts). His speed naturally enhances his capabilities to move via running, jumping, and parkour-like maneuvers to keep his momentum going. His agility and balance are extremely coordinated, as he was shown effortlessly “surfing” atop an undulating wave-like cloud of Keyblades and performing rapid sequences of nearly impossible acrobatic feats without tiring or dizziness.

Vanitas’ strength goes well beyond the average human, as he’s seen breaking a heavy wooden Keyblade in half with no effort, creating a gust of wind powerful enough to send two Keyblade Masters flying with a single swing of his arm, and clashing blows with other Keyblade Masters, who have performed feats of strength ranging from lifting large boulders to knocking full-sized buildings through the air. His strength feeds into his physical strikes, as Vanitas’ attacks also compare and sometimes trump other Keyblade Masters, whose strikes have been shown to cleave apart buildings and landmasses, even able to shatter Ventus's metaphysical Dive to the Heart pillar with a single strike. His strength is further augmented through the χ-blade when Vanitas wields it, both the wind gust and pillar shattering being prime examples.

Vanitas’ resilience and durability are greatly enhanced beyond the other Keyblade wielders he battles against. He survives various beatings from many Keyblade Masters while taking little to no bodily damage, even laughing them off and instantly recovering from his defeat. Large amounts of blunt-force trauma tend to only put him down for a few moments before he revives, though he’s slightly more vulnerable to piercing or cutting attacks. But even those won’t pause him for long due to the hellish training he endured for years with his Master. Vanitas’ tolerance—and sardonic enjoyment—for pain and injury reaches nigh-disturbing levels. The deaths of the Unversed cause him immense physical agony, yet shortly after his creation, he kept creating and destroying Unversed out of his own self-loathing, developing a great resilience to pain.

His high endurance and stamina are intensely developed, seen in such instances as him jumping off a high cliff and landing squarely on his feet without the slightest discomfort or slowing down, and repeatedly fighting the trio of Keyblade Masters over the course of a few days on top of traveling between worlds to spread his Unversed. During the final battle, Vanitas bounced back and forth between battles, all while staying calm and composed and without showing signs of exhaustion or weakness as he fought one Keyblade Master long enough to drive her to unconsciousness. Even if he is defeated, his stamina and resilience enable him to quickly get back up as if nothing happened and act to either retreat or continue another round.

Vanitas is a Keyblade Wielder, a warrior that intermingles swordsmanship, magic, and acrobatics. Having been trained by the nigh-unparalleled Master Xehanort, Vanitas is a very accomplished and extremely aggressive opponent, showing fluid mastery in casting dark magic and wielding the Keyblade, a magical key-like sword. Vanitas usually wields his personal Keyblade, the Void Gear, but when fused with Ventus, he gains the ability to wield the most powerful Keyblade of all, the χ-blade.

In combat, Vanitas’ prowess in using his weapon comes through stringing physical combos and magic together, both simultaneously and in succession, to viciously overwhelm his opponents. He possesses inhuman swiftness, speed, and agility, able to perform complicated and nearly impossible acrobatic feats, and is especially dangerous and formidable in close combat. Vanitas augments his formidable battle style with tricky maneuvers including teleporting behind opponents to dodge attacks at high speeds, launching counterattacks immediately after leaving afterimages of himself to confuse them his enemies, and levitating to avoid attacks and keep a high advantage in mobility over his foes.

Vanitas’ nature as a being of the purest form of darkness gives him complete control over the element. This not only gives him a near-immunity to the darkness’ corrupting influence, but also allows him to use dark magic to teleport, infuse his Keyblade with dark energy, and surround himself in darkness as a defensive shield and offensive enhancement. Vanitas’ arguably most dangerous and destructive ability, however, is his power to create and control the Unversed. Not only can he manipulate his negative emotions and spawn them as Unversed, but if an Unversed is destroyed, he can simply reabsorb the negativity left behind to empower himself. The negative emotion then respawns another Unversed he can summon at will, starting the cycle over again and giving him a limitless army of pawns.

Vanitas is a powerful and dangerous opponent to face in battle due to his vicious offense and vexing defense. Because of his arrogance and sadistic tendencies, he prefers to mercilessly beat down his opponents alone to prove his superiority. To this end, Vanitas can emit a strange aura of darkness that prevents other Keyblade wielders from using D-Links when battling him, something Terra, Ventus, and Aqua found out when battling him. Outside of Birth by Sleep, this means that opponents facing him should be prepared to rely only on their own power; he rarely permits his adversaries’ friends to interfere and aid in the fight. However, the Keyblade wielders still have access to powerful attacks such as Command Styles and Shotlocks. Outside of Birth by Sleep, this means that opponents can still utilize “ultimate attacks” and other powerful techniques (often seen as ‘cinematic’ skills in fighting and action games). Even though Vanitas can avoid most of the damage Shotlocks and other “ultimate attacks” cause, the brief invulnerability these techniques grant makes them useful for enduring his boss-level attacks.

Different adversaries have different styles of battle, some of which are more effective against Vanitas than others. Battle styles and weapons that focus on or grant their users high strength and attack are useful to slam past his insane resilience and delay his assault. Physical fighters are best advised to use short-but-powerful combos, fast-paced aerial attacks, and long-range strikes. Battle styles and weapons that that are magically-oriented are effective against him if an opponent opts to use a magical “zoning” strategy. A prime example consists of explosives, such as the user surrounding themselves with a barrier of mines while tracking Vanitas with seeking mines. Getting into his space and laying down explosives is a good method for initially attacking him, due to his propensity for moving into the mines in the name of keeping up his offense. Notably, Vanitas has an exploitable weakness to gravity-based spells or wind-based magics, the former suspending him in the air and leaving him open to attacks (if he doesn’t teleport) and the latter interrupting his combo-based offense. However, good timing is needed to land these attacks without being brutally countered.

While other offensives outside these styles can clash with him, he tends to overpower them with his skills. Attempting long attack strings, flashy dodging, offensive evading techniques, or trading physical blows with him is highly discouraged, due to Vanitas’ tendency to escape his opponents by teleporting and counterattacking while the opponent is in mid-attack. Conversely, the most basic forms of dodging techniques and gliding are advised due to their larger windows of invincibility avoiding his close-range attacks and long-range magic. Utilizing a hit-and-run strategy is a good option, but these attacks need to be powerful and well-timed, else he’ll catch on and counterattack or simply shrug off the damage. When it comes to prolonged battles, opponents should stick to using healing items or physical techniques that heal on contact to recover from injuries; attempting to use healing spells gives Vanitas plenty of time to rejuvenate himself and/or steal the magic’s healing efforts.

"Empty creature from Ventus riven... to you, the name Vanitas shall be given."
—Master Xehanort, upon Vanitas' creation

Four years before the events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Ventus served as Master Xehanort's apprentice. The Keyblade wielder was sent to the Keyblade Graveyard, where he was forced by his master to face several Heartless in an attempt to forge the χ-blade. Ventus was unable to use his darkness and was knocked unconscious. Losing his patience, Master Xehanort then proceeded to use his Keyblade to unlock Ventus' heart, extracting the darkness within and resulting in an orb of dark energy forming into a young boy in a mask. This creature was then given the name "Vanitas" by Master Xehanort.

At first, Vanitas was a faceless being much like a Heartless but with red eyes. The first thing he felt was sadness for his separation from Ventus. However, that sadness soon turned to hate and contempt for what he considered his weakness. This eventually turned into self-hatred as Vanitas, in a way, hated himself for being so weak. Though Vanitas was well-aware of his own existence, what soon followed was an intense uncertainty towards himself as he felt very lost and anxious about his future and started questioning why he was born.

But every time he felt something, a creature was created from his body from that feeling. These creatures, called the Unversed, were nightmarish caricatures of his fledgling emotions, coming in all shapes and sizes. Their sudden existence irritated Vanitas; he was disgusted by the fact such monsters were born from him. Looking at the Unversed was like looking at his own weakness that he did not want to admit, so he started to kill them with his Keyblade without any hesitation. But every time he destroyed an Unversed, Vanitas felt intense physical pain running through his body: the very pain he inflicted on the creature. The destroyed Unversed, instead of dispersing, were quietly re-absorbed into Vanitas, bringing with them the pain and negative feelings that came with their deaths. The feelings returning to his mind added more fuel to the irritation he was feeling and in turn another Unversed of "irritation" was born from him, creating even more negativity and thus creating more Unversed. So began a vicious cycle: an Unversed would come to be, Vanitas would destroy it, and with its return, another would be created from his pain.

Around this time, a newborn’s heart came into contact with Ventus’ fractured heart; this newborn was Sora, who offered to fill the empty spaces in Ventus’ heart and support him until he was strong enough to heal his own heart. However, since Vanitas was the other half of Ventus’ heart, Sora directly contacted his heart as well. A sharp pain pierced his chest and Vanitas' body fell to the ground of the wasteland near the Keyblade Graveyard, verging on the edge of consciousness and feeling himself being engulfed by absolute Darkness. That was when Vanitas heard Sora's voice and then he saw Light. The Light eventually surrounded his whole body and he heard a voice say, "Let's open the door". Upon opening his eyes, Vanitas found out that now he had a normal boy's face; he’d receive Sora’s face due to the connection of their hearts. He also realized that someone, probably also a newborn heart like himself, had saved Ventus' heart from completely fading away.

Despite this, Vanitas could not abide being around Ventus. He told Master Xehanort that if Xehanort kept both him and Ventus, Vanitas couldn't guarantee that he could keep Ventus alive, since his innate hatred and longing for his other half made it so Vanitas found it hard to suppress his natural impulse to hurt or maybe even destroy the comatose boy. To allow both Ventus and Vanitas to grow without destroying each other, Xehanort had to take Ventus to the Land of Departure, asking Master Eraqus to take care of the boy and train him, while Vanitas remained with Xehanort.

After Master Xehanort leaves Ventus under Master Eraqus’s care in the Land of Departure, he finds Vanitas waiting outside of the room. Master Xehanort tells Vanitas that he should have stayed behind in the Badlands, and Vanitas instead answers with an inquiry into Ventus’s wellbeing. Upon the lack of response, he dismisses any concern. Xehanort informs Vanitas of the existence of thirteen ancient darknesses and their fates. Vanitas dodges all of Xehanort’s questions about the subject, either answering them with questions of his own or dismissing them entirely. Xehanort suggests that it was destiny that brought him, Vanitas, and Ventus together, which causes Vanitas to become lost in thought. Ultimately, Vanitas denies any connection to true Darkness, but Xehanort remains curious of Vanitas's true nature. Due to the link between his heart and Ventus's, Vanitas could feel some of what Ventus felt, discovering the bond between Ventus and Terra. Vanitas reported this to Master Xehanort, who decided to use their bond against the two.

After Ventus left, however, Vanitas started to miss him greatly, and he kept wondering why they got separated from each other, soon even blaming Xehanort for their separation. This once again brought him to feel miserable and anxious about his future without Ventus; the more he thought about these questions, the more anxious, irritated, and lonely he felt, and the more Unversed were formed. In immense pain, Vanitas began to destroy the Unversed in a rage, restarting the cycle of perpetuating pain and suffering that he could not escape. As Vanitas suffered from the trauma, Master Xehanort only coldly watch his creation harming himself from far away.

During this time, a new torment appeared. Ventus awoke from his comatose state and began to live again. Since Ventu’s heart was Vanitas’ other half, Vanitas was able to see all the memories that Ventus formed. Ventus was well cared for by Master Eraqus, nursed back to health by his new Master and fellow students Terra and Aqua. As Ventus quickly developed strong friendships with Terra and Aqua, Vanitas could only watch his other half’s happy memories fill his mind, unable to feel the pleasant emotions associated with them. Already immensely jealous of Ventus for previously not being able to feel anything in his comatose state, Vanitas was consumed with a loathing envy for his other half’s happy life apart from him. More Unversed spewed from his body, continuing his torturous existence.

Vanitas desperately wanted to escape from the vicious cycle of anguish, but as young as he was at that time, he simply didn't know any ways other than killing the Unversed. Time and time again, until Vanitas destroyed one Unversed too many and the pain became too much for him to endure; he collapsed in tears, unable to do more than cry in the desolate Keyblade Graveyard. Taking advantage of Vanitas' brokenness and sadness, Xehanort finally approached him and told him that the only way to be freed from his sufferings was by becoming the χ-blade. Becoming the χ-blade was also the only way for him to truly unite with Ventus again. The χ-blade would bring salvation not only to him but also to the whole world.

Mad with desire to free himself from his unbearable fate, Vanitas seized onto this one hope, and to become the χ-blade fixated itself in his head as his goal, his whole life purpose, and his only Light of Hope to lead him out of that Darkness. With this agreement, determined to unite with Ventus and put an end to his own suffering, Vanitas became Master Xehanort's apprentice, accepting training to strengthen himself in preparation for reuniting with Ventus. Thus Vanitas, born from the darkness in Ventus' heart, became a dark enigma and a chaotic weapon, the source of the Unversed, and a key component in Master Xehanort's dark machinations.

"A mysterious boy who hides his face behind a mask. He has ties to Master Xehanort. Vanitas warned Ventus that Terra was in some kind of danger but disappeared before explaining any further."
—Journal entry for Vanitas (The Masked Boy)

Four years later, Master Xehanort views the battle between Terra and Aqua as part of their Mark of Mastery exam. He leaves the room afterwards to find a hidden Vanitas awaiting him. The two converse about Ventus, and Vanitas claims that Ventus' performance was weak and "someone needs to break that loser in". Master Xehanort agrees but tells Vanitas to do so somewhere else as he needed to keep up appearances. Vanitas complies, deciding to give Ventus an "incentive" to leave home.

Vanitas later appears before Ventus in his room, speaking of Terra being a different person, and that Ventus should follow and try to help him before it's too late. Ventus becomes very defensive, saying that Vanitas does not know the first thing about Terra and that they will always be friends. Vanitas is unimpressed and simply mocks Ventus’ friendship with Terra, telling him to grow up and threatens Ventus with the loss of Terra. Claiming that unless Ventus sees it for himself and looks beyond his "tiny world", he will never know the truth, Vanitas vanishes into a Corridor of Darkness.

Vanitas then travels to different worlds, spreading his Unversed across them to create chaos and misery in hopes of making Ventus strong enough to forge the χ-blade.

After his first few ventures throughout the worlds, Ventus spots Vanitas in the Lanes Between and is lured to the Keyblade Graveyard. Ventus interrogates the masked boy about his claims that Terra has changed and what he meant about Terra being a different person, but Vanitas insultingly reiterates what he said before—that Terra will be gone forever—and challenges Ventus to a duel, intent on testing his power and revealing for the first time he is a Keyblade wielder.

Despite Ventus' best efforts, Vanitas easily outmatches Ventus, gaining the upper hand mid-way, and knocking him to the ground. Vanitas then prepares to eliminate Ventus, deeming the boy too worthless to be of use, but just before Vanitas could execute the coup de grace, Mickey Mouse appears out of nowhere, repelling Vanitas and healing Ventus. Mickey then reprimands Vanitas for using his Keyblade to maliciously bully others, and the two then proceed to fight Vanitas. Together they defeat him, but the boy callously gives them the win and simply shrugs off the fight upon his loss. He leaves the world, claiming that Ventus is on "probation" as a warning.

After the battle against the Trinity Armor in Radiant Garden, the ensuing argument forces Terra, Ventus, and Aqua to go their separate ways. While Aqua is in the Central Square, Vanitas appears, taunting her by calmly inquiring about Ventus and if he has gotten stronger. When Aqua asks what he means, Vanitas becomes hostile, stating that he is asking the questions and claiming that between the two of them, he will be the only one who will walk away alive. The masked boy attacks Aqua, threatening to eliminate her, and the two fight a vicious battle with Aqua emerging the victor.

After the duel, Aqua attempts to unmask Vanitas while he is unconscious, but the dark enigma quickly recovers, startling her with an insane laugh. He then compliments her skill and congratulates her on her victory, making an ambiguous comment about her being his backup plan, revealing that it was all a ruse to test her strength. Ventus returns to Aqua's side just as Vanitas leaves in another Corridor of Darkness. This encounter indicates that Vanitas may have sought to possess someone other than Ventus if Ventus proved too weak to reform the χ-blade, with Aqua being the best candidate.

While in Neverland, Vanitas encounters and kidnaps Mickey on Master Xehanort's orders to use Mickey as bait to lure Ventus back to the Keyblade Graveyard. Though the fight is not shown, it is clear Vanitas wins. The villain later crosses paths with Aqua again, this time with Ventus' cherished Wooden Keyblade, a gift to Ventus from Terra. Vanitas cruelly mocks Aqua for playing treasure hunter with the Lost Boys, derisively referring to them as "kiddies" before proceeding to tell her that Ventus' newfound strength means he has "outgrown" the toy, and then snaps the Wooden Keyblade in half, an act that both enrages and horrifies Aqua.

Throwing the pieces aside, Vanitas claims that he has also outgrown his need for Aqua as his backup plan and draws his Keyblade, intent on eliminating her. Aqua, outraged by the act of cruelty and at the thought of Ventus being in danger, calls Vanitas a "freak" and battles the dark enigma once again, soundly defeating him and knocking him unconscious. Aqua, believing she has finally finished Vanitas and exhausted by the battle, passes out, as a revived Vanitas takes the opportunity to escape once again.

Vanitas encounters Ventus again in Destiny Islands, after the latter is thrown through a portal summoned by Terra. Ventus initially tells Vanitas that he is through with him. But Vanitas simply tells him that since he is strong enough, Ventus can join with him to forge the χ-blade. Ventus refuses, claiming that the χ-blade cannot be forged if he does not fight. Vanitas, though slightly angered, remains unfazed, responding only by coldly stating that Ventus was once "too broken to talk back".

Then, in the ensuing flashback, Vanitas explains his birth from the darkness in Ventus' heart, and how he took his place as Master Xehanort's apprentice. This causes Ventus great pain in regaining his memories. Vanitas then gives Ventus a reason to fight, challenging the boy to come find him in the Keyblade Graveyard, the one and only place where the χ-blade can be forged, where he threatens to kill Terra and Aqua by "choking the life out of them" to see how long Ventus will "play the pacifist". He then disappears into a Corridor of Darkness after demanding Ventus forge the χ-blade through battle. Ventus, haunted by Vanitas' deranged threats, and determined to end this once and for all, goes to the Keyblade Graveyard.

When Terra, Ventus, and Aqua approach their final showdown with Vanitas and Master Xehanort at the Keyblade Graveyard, intense battles ensue. The two villains meet up with the trio, with Master Xehanort explaining his ultimate goal for the χ-blade. The trio armors up and Terra quickly charges towards them. Master Xehanort intervenes, however, blocking Terra's path with massive rock formations. As Terra continues to pursue Master Xehanort, Vanitas goes after Aqua and Ventus, riding on a cloud of Keyblades Master Xehanort created. The two fight valiantly against the dark apprentice, but not before Vanitas returns to Master Xehanort's side before the latter freezes Ventus. He battles Terra alongside Master Xehanort, who later commands Vanitas to go after Ventus and Aqua again.

Vanitas attacks Aqua from above, knocking her unconscious with a devastating blow, and prepares to impale her through the chest while Ventus lies helpless and frozen. Ventus summons all his willpower, however, and thaws out of the ice to face Vanitas in battle, defeating him once again to protect Aqua. Vanitas compliments Ventus on his skill and finally reveals his face, explaining himself to be the source of the Unversed plague affecting the worlds.

Glowing with dark energy, Vanitas then summons several Unversed to restrain Ventus as he proudly explains his plan: to spread the Unversed across the worlds, in hopes of luring Ventus from home and making him strong enough to forge the χ-blade. Approaching his restrained other half, Vanitas forcefully integrates himself into Ventus, invading his heart and completing Ventus physically before taking over his body. In a burst of light, Vanitas and Ventus are transported to the Dive to the Heart. Ventus' pillar now hosts a picture of Vanitas alongside his own, revealing their shared heart is now combined, but not complete. Descending from above, Vanitas reveals himself wielding an incomplete version of the χ-blade.

Vanitas claims their union was incomplete; they only managed to make a fraction of the χ-blade. He then demands to join with Ventus once again to fully repair and complete the legendary weapon, but Ventus refuses, vowing to defeat Vanitas and destroy the χ-blade. The dark apprentice contemptuously laughs at Ventus' declaration, warningly reminding the "idiot" that the χ-blade is made of Ventus’ heart too, and if it is destroyed, Ventus' heart would vanish forever. However, Ventus rebukes his dark half, saying he will fight for his friends and destroy both Vanitas and the χ-blade no matter what, even if the price is his heart. The determination irritates Vanitas, and he once more mocks Ventus’ friendships as the reason to fight. The two Keyblade wielders then begin a final decisive showdown in the Dive to the Heart, both intent on protecting what’s important to him.

While Ventus metaphysically battles Vanitas in their shared mind, Aqua and Mickey in the Keyblade Graveyard are attacked by Ventus-Vanitas, the body of Ventus now possessed by Vanitas’ influence. Ventus-Vanitas summons the completed χ-blade and tries to attack Aqua, only for her to be saved by Mickey. He then goes on to explain that he plans to unlock Kingdom Hearts so the worlds can be connected and the legendary Keyblade War can begin again. Aqua, sick of Vanitas' nonsense, confronts him in a furious battle one last time.

Vanitas' metaphysical battle with Ventus comes to an end. At the climax, Vanitas destroys the station pillar on which they were fighting and forces a D-Link on Ventus in hopes of completing their fusion; however, this also allows Ventus to copy all of Vanitas' move, albeit replacing them with Light versions. Ventus prevails and finally lays a finishing blow on Vanitas, who loses his grip on the incomplete χ-blade and helplessly gropes for it as it shatters. Vanitas’ eyes close as he dies, fading away into Ventus’ heart and taking all Unversed in existence with him.

At the same time as Vanitas and the incomplete χ-blade’s destruction in Ventus’ heart, Vanitas’ control over Ventus’ body in the real world is relinquished. The completed χ-blade in the real world reverts to its incomplete form and become unstable, momentarily shocking Ventus-Vanitas and allowing Aqua to overpower him and defeats her possessed friend while the χ-blade self-destructs. Unfortunately, it is a pyrrhic victory, as Ventus loses his heart and falls into a coma in the process, and his previously-possessed body collapses heartless in front of Aqua. Ventus’ heart flees from his comatose body, taking the submerged Vanitas with him.

Aqua later places Ventus’ body in a chamber within the newly created Castle Oblivion to keep him safe while she goes to reclaim Terra from the Darkness. During her search for Terra, she feels a powerful force coming from the Keyblade Graveyard. As Aqua goes to investigate, she discovers it is the remnant of Vanitas, a physical embodiment of his lingering thoughts and powerful emotions left over after Vanitas' defeat. Aqua engages in battle with the phantom and emerges victorious, with the Vanitas Remnant disappearing back into darkness. She successfully locates Terra, but fails to completely reclaim him, only able to send his body and heart away from the Darkness at the cost of herself becoming lost in the Darkness instead.

Alone and sorrowful, Ventus’ damaged-but-complete heart wandered, but because of their connection long ago, it finds its way to a young Sora, currently in the process of in his own Awakening. Feeling Ventus’ exhausted emotions and weakened spirit, Sora accepts Ventus’ heart and takes it into his own body, granting Ventus shelter and rest while Sora gains the ability to use the Keyblade. Vanitas, now recombined within Ventus’ heart, spends the following years between the end of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep to the start of Kingdom Hearts III sleeping within Ventus’ heart as it resides within Sora’s heart.

"Even if you are not the prisoner."
—Vanitas to Sora

Twelve years later, when Young Xehanort appears before Sora within the cathedral at La Cité des Cloches, Vanitas's heart appears within Young Xehanort in the Realm of Sleep. Ventus' heart reacts inside Sora and allows him to see an image of Vanitas alongside the Xehanort. In unison, Xehanort and Vanitas call Sora a hypocrite, claiming that he has turned his own heart into a prison (as Ventus, Roxas and Xion (and Vanitas by proxy) are trapped inside Sora), even if Sora himself is not the prisoner. The pair then vanish. Vanitas refers to the comatose Ventus, who found refuge within Sora's heart after the events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Though Vanitas still lacks a body following his defeat, Sora was able to see him physically due to Ventus's heart reacting to Vanitas's from within him..

At some point prior to his destruction, Vanitas's fractured heart was collected by Young Xehanort and brought to the future to serve as a member of the real Organization XIII. Vanitas, now wearing a black coat, gathers with the rest of the real Organization at The World That Never Was to welcome the return of Master Xehanort and to forcefully induct Sora as their final member. However, their efforts to implant Sora with a fragment of Xehanort's heart is derailed upon the arrival of Lea, Donald and Goofy, whose interference causes the Organization's allotted time to expire, forcing them to withdraw with their numbers incomplete.

"Join your heart with mine!"
—Vanitas upon discovering Ventus inside Sora’s heart

As his time was up without a proper vessel in the future, Vanitas's heart was returned back to its original place in time, though he, along with the other time-traveling members of the real Organization, soon reassemble in the future. There, they are given refined replicas from Vexen's early batches of the Replica Program to use as vessels for their hearts, thus allowing them to remain anchored to the present time.

Vanitas discovers he is now able to bring forth Unversed from the negative emotions of others and not just his own. Vanitas ponders on how, despite having disappeared following his battle with Ventus at the Keyblade Graveyard years ago, he has returned due to having been "called back" by Sora. Vanitas goes on to note that he has ancient memories of the Keyblade Graveyard, though he does not know how he got them or whether they belong to him, Ventus, or someone else.

Vanitas soon resumes his goal of retrieving Ventus' heart to make himself complete, but with him in control. Vanitas first appears in Monstropolis, in which he explains that he encountered the monster Randall Boggs during his travels to recover his strength. Randall explains that his world is powered up by the screams of children that serve as a source of energy thanks to Monsters Inc. Vanitas decides to manipulate Randall into using his desire for revenge. Vanitas also encourages Randall to collect more scream power as if a child's heart becomes broken, then they'll provide unlimited amounts of negative emotions. The two proceed to put their plan into motion with Vanitas providing Randall with an army of Heartless and Unversed.

Upon causing enough havoc and chaos, the villains decide to create a giant Unversed known as the Lump of Horror, in which Randall later sends it after Sora, Donald, Goofy, Mike Wazowski, and Sulley. After the heroes defeat his remaining minions, Vanitas senses Ventus's heart residing within Sora's body, and soon decides to confront Sora and his allies personally with the intention of extracting his "brother's" heart from Sora. However, Sulley catches Vanitas off-guard by surprising him from behind and chucks him through a series of doorways to prevent him from returning.

Vanitas makes his second appearance at the Land of Departure. In hopes of finding Ventus, Vanitas follows Aqua, Sora, Donald, and Goofy to the Land of Departure, where Sora's group attempts to awaken Ventus and reunite his heart with his body. Vanitas emerges and commends Aqua for being able to keep Ventus's body hidden away for so long. Aqua creates a barrier to fight against the masked boy while keeping Ventus safe from harm. Vanitas clashes evenly with Aqua at first, then turns his assault onto the comatose Ventus. Aqua shields her friend with her body and Vanitas nearly finishes off the weakened Keyblade Master, only for Sora to release Ventus' heart, allowing the latter to return and save Aqua. Seeing himself heavily outnumbered, Vanitas chooses to retreat for the time being and update the Organization on Ventus's status.

Vanitas later returns at the Keyblade Graveyard, where he along with Xehanort's various incarnations send off a swarm of Heartless, Nobodies and Unversed to wear down the Seven Guardians of Light. Despite this, the guardians prevail and the battle between light and darkness continues. When the guardians face off against the Organization in the Skein of Severance, Vanitas fights alongside Terra-Xehanort against Ventus and Aqua at the Twist of Isolation. As Ventus tried constantly to reach Terra's heart inside Terra-Xehanort, Vanitas mockingly says he feels left out. Ventus in turn tells Vanitas that they are the same and Vanitas would be returning to his heart.

As it seemed Aqua and Ventus were no match for Vanitas and Terra-Xehanort, Sora arrived to help support them. Upon finally being defeated, Vanitas's mask slowly shatters apart, revealing his face to Sora, who appears surprised at the uncanny resemblance to himself. Vanitas explains to the shocked boy that they look alike because Sora's heart replaced him as the missing piece of Ventus's heart. Vanitas reveals that since Sora kept Ventus's heart safe for years, this makes the three of them "brothers". Ventus and Sora try to resonate with their "brother" to join their side and reject the darkness in hopes of redeeming him, only for Vanitas to reject this offer instead. Vanitas states that he is darkness, and in that sense, is already by their side as the shadow they cast. Before fading away, Vanitas reveals that he was content with his role as nothing more than "darkness", as that is the role he has chosen for himself, before fading away with a satisfied grin, his heart returning back to its proper place in time as he becomes the sixth member of the real Organization to fall.

One year after Master Xehanort’s defeat and Sora's disappearance, a data recreation of Vanitas, along with the rest of the real Organization XIII, is fought by a digital copy of Sora with the hopes of uncovering the real Sora's location from the encrypted data they possessed. After defeating all thirteen data recreations however, the results proved inconclusive.

DLC Retcon: In the Re Mind addition to the original game, during Vanitas' final battle, a new revelation on Vanitas's existence is revealed. Vanitas explains that he wasn't "the same" as Ventus describes himself to be with him, but rather is his own independent entity. He was merely buried and hidden deep in Ventus's heart for a long time, and all Xehanort did was tear him apart from Ventus. Union X later reveals Vanitas is a fragment of one of the thirteen darknesses who escaped to the future in the hearts of ancient keyblade wielders. At the moment, I do not play Vanitas with this element in mind.
vaincreux: (Default)
Vanitas is the "dark" half of Ventus' heart, a being made of the dark emotions, dark inclinations, dark thoughts, all the darkness that Ventus once held inside him. Because of this, Vanitas is very dark character duh, has little in the way of redeeming qualities, and was referred to as an "abomination beyond hope of salvation" by Xehanort. At his core, Vanitas is proud, ruthless, calculating, aggressive, selfish, cruel, uncaring, rude, violent, cunning, cold-hearted, sarcastic, vain, reckless, sadomasochist, and chaotic. He enjoys humiliating his opponents, craves things like power, carnage, and war, and relishes causing misery, suffering, and anguish around him. He despises "good" things like light, friendship, and peace, but thanks to his twisted personality, also hates emptiness, loneliness, and boredom.

Initially one with Ventus, once Xehanort extracted the darkness from Ventus’ heart and gave it form and life, Vanitas was born. At first, Vanitas was much like Ventus, curious and confused, and felt sadness over his separation from Ventus. However, this sadness was swiftly replaced with hatred towards what Vanitas perceived as his weaker half, and soon that hatred turn to self-loathing. His darkness caused friction between the two, due to Vanitas’ innate desire to hurt Ventus, and by the time Xehanort took Ventus away for his own safety, Vanitas had become steeped in his own darkens to the point of rage. Xehanort returned and quickly set about training Vanitas via cruel and intense methods, aided by Vanitas’ creation and destruction of his own Unversed, the physical embodiments of his own fledging feelings and pain.

While he endured the grueling training, Vanitas was able to see Ventus’ memories and thus witness his other half’s warm friendships with Terra and Aqua and his pleasant time training under Master Eraqus, joys he could never experience that only further drove his wrathful envy. This created an endless cycle of anguish for four years, during which time Vanitas gradually snapped both mentally and emotionally. It was then that Xehanort told Vanitas of the χ-blade, and how his fusion with Ventus would not only create the χ-blade but would also free him from the torment of his existence. Due to the suffering he endured at the hands of his Master, and his desperate desire for salvation, Vanitas locked onto the single-minded goal to achieve enough strength to forge the χ-Blade with Ventus, believing that to be the salvation he desires.

By the time Xehanort unleashed him upon the World, Vanitas had become a proud, cunning, and cruel individual. He is an uncaring, cold, and ruthless individual, having not the slightest sympathy for anyone but himself. As such, the lives of others, including that of even Master Xehanort, hold absolutely no value to him, and he shows zero remorse for his actions. Despite his loyalty to Master Xehanort, he has no qualms with disregarding and defying his orders if he feels the need arises; he attempts to eliminate Ventus after defeating him in their first battle despite knowing full well that Master Xehanort needed Ventus alive for his plans. All while openly acknowledging that he would be going against Xehanort's orders by doing so but does not care as he verbally shrugs it off and arrogantly states that Ventus was no longer necessary.

As a pragmatist, he will strike without a moment's thought, warning, or hesitation, as seen when he ambushes Aqua in the Keyblade Graveyard. He will use whatever had he feels is practical to give him an advantage in a fight, such as tying down Ventus with his Unversed to force a fusion upon him when he couldn’t fight back. Despite his intense power and skill, Vanitas can be an unscrupulous fighter and won’t think twice about using psychological or emotional warfare to undermine an enemy and eliminating an unconscious opponent (something Aqua and Ventus almost experienced if not for Ventus’ and Mickey’s respective interferences).

Vanitas holds everything and everyone in contempt and nurses a great resentment against Ventus and the friends he has. This bitterness stems from his excruciating past and intense jealousy towards his other half over the friends that Ventus found and the strong relationships he has with them, leading him to hate everything and everyone who finds happiness. He regards friendship and such positive emotional bonds as pathetic and weak, sarcastically pointing out their flaws and potential breaking points. The envy he feels is seen in his frequent criticizing of Ventus' friendships with Terra and Aqua as weak and blithely-inexperienced, when he callously antagonizes Aqua for playing with the Lost Boys before breaking Ventus' wooden Keyblade (a gift from Terra) in an act of cruelty against her, his constantly calling Ventus "idiot" and forcing Ventus to fight him by threatening to kill Terra and Aqua when Ventus refused to.

For all his rage and twisted aggression, Vanitas carries himself in an extremely calm and collected manner and speaks with a confident, smooth voice that often hints at boredom and superiority. He rarely loses his cool or lets anything affect him, only raises his voice to threaten others, and keeps command of the situation as often as he can. Vanitas has a very tactical mind, not above manipulating others to get them to do what he wants. He recognizes bonds and feelings despite his hatred of them and uses Ventus’ affection for Terra to get him to leave the safety of his world via threatening Ventus with Terra’s loss and injury.

Similarly, he’s not a mindless lackey and makes his own plans outside of his Master’s, determining for himself that Aqua would be a good "backup" for his plans (to fuse with a heart of light to form the χ-blade) if something should happen to Ventus, and thus sparing her life for later. However, he can be reckless when pushed to an edge, seen when Vanitas shatters the supporting station in his and Ventus’ Dive to the Heart—implied to be reflections of their heart— indicating he is willing to risk losing his heart forever if it meant defeating Ventus.

Vanitas also possesses a high degree of arrogance, believing his skills surpass all others; in his first fight with Aqua, he claims that he will be the only one that will walk away alive. When fighting her for the final time, Vanitas taunts her by sarcastically asking if she has given up and boasts that Aqua was just "wasting her energy" trying to stop him and protect Ventus. Right before possessing Ventus, he remarks that Ventus never stood a chance against him and Master Xehanort. When fighting Ventus for the final time, he laughs when Ventus declared he would defeat him and destroy the χ-blade.

During this same battle, Vanitas directly states his belief that he is the superior half of Ventus' heart. His swollen ego and aggressive drive also gives Vanitas a flair for the dramatic to show off his power and abilities, such as using a twisting flare-kick to rise from the floor instead of just getting up and later surfing upon a literal wave of dead Keyblades to attack his opponents with. This extreme overconfidence in his abilities and deliberate display in his dominance usually leads to his downfall as he underestimates his opponents when fighting.

Despite his calm surface and arrogance, Vanitas is both mentally unstable and emotionally disturbed. He displays a sadomasochistic side when fighting, inciting his opponents to suffer and "show him anguish" while striking them, and expresses clear delight in psychologically tormenting his opponents with emotional attacks to stoke their rage or unnerve their resolve. Upon being defeated by Aqua, Vanitas breaks out in a fit of psychotic laughter despite being floored and in pain and later expresses intense excitement towards the prospect of the Keyblade War and the legends about its catastrophic, universe-ending consequences.

He swings between moods easily, behaving in a stoic and icy manner when he’s talking to or intimidating someone, only to suddenly become loud and violent when he’s fighting, spewing insults and demands between his dodges and strikes. His attitude is easily ignited, seen when he initially tries to be polite to Aqua, but is too much of a Jerkass to pull it off when she asks him a question, he gets irritated and attacks her.

The only thing Vanitas holds any concern over is his own being and survival. Intensely selfish, his one fear is his own loneliness, boredom, and death. The one time in the entire game Vanitas expresses genuine concern and fear is when he has been defeated by Ventus for the final time. Losing his grip on the χ-blade, Vanitas begins to panic as he sees his only way of salvation floating away from him and makes a desperate attempt to grab the weapon in a hopeless flurry before finally succumbing to his wounds and dying. Despite being an unrepentant sociopath with a villainous and fearsome persona, it’s arguable as to how much of a tragic antagonist Vanitas is. His whole personality, while a great contrast with those of Sora, Ventus, Roxas, and all connected to him, was modeled by the tragedies in his past thanks to his creation and treatment under Xehanort's ambitions and manipulations.

Vanitas’ name holds direct connotation to his personality and story. Tetsuya Nomura wanted to give him a name that meant "empty" and eventually found the Latin word "vanitas", which means "vanity" or "emptiness". Since the word also looked and sounded similar to Ventus’ name, and the Japanese writing for it had the same kanji for "sora" in it, the name was a perfect fit. In Vanitas' case, however, the kanji doesn't mean "sora [sky]" but "kara [empty]" (空, lit. "emptiness"), since the two words are written with the same kanji, but are said differently and have different meanings, further mirroring the differences between Sora and Vanitas.

Vanitas is a 15-year-old teenager who looks identical to Kingdom Hearts protagonist, Sora. However, while Sora is relatively slender and short, Vanitas sports a more matured physique, being taller with a noticeably more muscular build, akin to Sora’s best friend, Riku. Broad shoulders and a narrow waist give him an athletic appearance, though he remains sleek despite his musculature, and his arms and legs are nicely proportional to his height and build. Since he’s a mirror of Sora, Vanitas’ hair is also composed of a wild array of differently-sized spikes, "styled" into a vague diamond shape. However, Vanitas contrasts Sora’s coloring, having pale skin instead of Sora’s peach tan, golden-yellow eyes compared to Sora’s blue, and jet-black hair instead of Sora’s brunette. Though he shares the same face as Sora, Roxas, Ventus, and Xion, Vanitas’ darker expressions often harden his softer features into something more angular, black brows furrowed in irritation or focus or lifted in arrogance or amusement. Still, like the rest of his face twins, Vanitas is considered rather handsome and attractive, despite his dangerous air and horrible attitude.

In Birth by Sleep, Vanitas wears a black and red organic-looking bodysuit, akin to Riku's Dark Mode. This form-fitting suit molds very close to his body and gives the appearance of skinned black muscle tissue and sinew covering him from his neck to his knees and specifically outlining his pectorals and abs in a distorted version of the red Unversed insignia. The suit fades from black to red below his elbows and forms organic-looking "gloves" covering the back of his hands in red and his palms and fingers in black. A red belt around his waist holds up a stylized, knee-length fauld (half-skirt) of torn navy fabric with red tips, opened in the front and fastened by two red belts crossing in an X in front of his groin, all with silver buckles and clasps. He wears a pair of striated red boots with thick black soles and metal-rimmed lips, capped with red knee pads over black legs. A jaggedly-designed metal collar of sorts covers Vanitas chin, jaws, extends up onto his cheeks, and scoops around the back of his head. This collar supports and fits a silver "bikers" helmet covered with black glass, completely hiding his face and hair from view when he wears it.

In Kingdom Hearts III, Vanitas wears the Organization’s black coat, also called a "cloak". The main coat is a black trench coat of heavy material that is double-breasted and twin-tailed, reaches near the down to the wearer’s ankles, and comes with a hood and long sleeves. A large silver zipper fastens at the top and zips down the front from collar to bottom hem to seal the coat. The zipper itself features a small Unversed symbol. It has silver drawstrings for the hood, decorated with a large silver bead hanging from each end, and a silver chain ornament adorned with four large cylindrical silver beads that fastens to a loop on either side of the collarbone region. While all black coats share the same basic design, most coats often have unique personal touches; for Vanitas, he once again dons his previous collared helmet with his coat. The coat can change size with the wearer, and additionally, while the coat can be put on and taken off as if it was just a coat, it magically manifests a matching set of black pants, boots, and gloves to replace (or cover) anything that the wearer was previously clothed in when it is pulled on, only to return the original clothing once pulled off. Vanitas wears his Darkness Suit "beneath" his coat’s magical trappings.

In an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, as well as various novelizations of the game, it is revealed that Vanitas’ similarity to Sora is due to a Sora's heart connecting with and filling in Ventus’ heart after it was fractured during Birth by Sleep. Because Vanitas is Ventus’ dark half, he was affected by Sora’s presence and his form took after the heart Ventus now shared. Had anyone else connected with Ventus' heart, Vanitas would have looked like that person (for example, if it had been Riku who had filled in Ventus' heart, Vanitas would have looked like Riku). His appearance prior to Ventus' connection with Sora was that of a featureless, humanoid creature of darkness akin to a Heartless but with red eyes, similar to the Anti Black Coat. Because of his connection to Sora through Ventus, Vanitas also shares Sora’s voice, however most would agree he doesn’t sound anything like Sora, since his voice is noticeably deeper, darker, and more mature than Sora’s and carries a smoothness to it compared to Sora’s more upbeat, excitable tone.

"He has no control over the darkness in his heart. The Keyblade is not his to bear.
He is an abomination beyond hope of salvation.
"

Vanitas (ヴァニタス Vanitasu) is a Keyblade wielder, the creation and second apprentice of Master Xehanort, the embodiment of the extracted darkness from Ventus' heart, and the progenitor of the Unversed.

For a time, he was simply known as The Masked Boy (仮面の少年 Kamen no Shōnen), and serves as one of the main villains in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and a supporting villain in Kingdom Hearts III as Rank XI of the real Organization XIII.

An aggressive, cruel, and selfish young man, he is one of the main antagonists in Kingdom Hearts, and works with Xehanort to create the χ-blade in order to gain Kingdom Hearts and begin a new Keyblade War. His goal for the conflict is simply wanting to see the chaos and suffering it will create.
